Description
Epithalon (also spelled Epitalon) is a synthetic tetrapeptide bioregulator with the amino acid sequence Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly (AEDG), developed by Vladimir Khavinson and colleagues at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology. The peptide was originally derived from the protein structure of Epithalamin, a pineal gland extract studied extensively in Russian gerontology research since the 1960s. Epithalon is investigated as a Khavinson-class short peptide with proposed epigenetic regulatory activity, including studies reporting telomerase reactivation, telomere elongation in cell-culture models, and modulation of melatonin and serotonin biosynthesis in the pineal gland. Research interest extends to circadian rhythm regulation, age-associated gene expression patterns, antioxidant defense pathways, and longevity-related endpoints in rodent and human aging studies. Its small molecular weight (~390 Da) supports cellular uptake and is reported to enable direct DNA / chromatin interaction at gene promoter regions, consistent with the broader Khavinson bioregulator hypothesis.
Benefits (Research Focus)
• Studied as a Khavinson-class tetrapeptide bioregulator for epigenetic gene-expression modulation
• Investigated for telomerase activity and telomere length in cell-culture models
• Explored for pineal gland regulation and melatonin / serotonin biosynthesis
• Examined for circadian rhythm research and sleep-wake cycle endpoints in aged models
• Researched for geroprotective effects and age-associated gene expression patterns
What Researchers Look At
• Telomerase enzymatic activity and telomere length in human somatic cell cultures
• Pineal gland melatonin synthesis enzymes (AANAT, ASMT) and circulating melatonin
• AACG-motif binding affinity and promoter region transcriptional modulation
• Antioxidant defense markers (SOD, catalase, glutathione peroxidase) in aged tissues
