Description
Hexarelin is a synthetic hexapeptide growth hormone secretagogue and analog of GHRP-6, originally characterized by the Camanni and Ghigo groups at the University of Turin in the early 1990s. The peptide functions as a potent ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a) agonist that stimulates endogenous growth hormone release from anterior pituitary somatotropes, reportedly with approximately 2- to 3-fold greater GH-releasing potency than GHRP-6. Hexarelin has also been investigated for binding interactions with cardiac CD36 scavenger receptors, distinguishing it from more selective GHS-R agonists such as ipamorelin and giving it a unique receptor profile in research models of cardiac biology. The compound is studied in preclinical research for GHS-R1a pharmacology, somatotropic axis signaling, receptor desensitization kinetics, and cardiac tissue research, and is frequently used as a reference compound in GH secretagogue structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies.
